LA The Daily 5 is in full swing. Each student chose their own first focus strategy to work on while they read, based on their initial reading self-assessment. They need some reminders to work on the strategy independently, but they are getting there! Bridge to Terrabithia has come to a sad end. The students have used their skills to compare and contrast characters and families, identify figurative language, summarize each chapter, identify allusions, analyze characters and contemplate the meaning of true friendship. We will continue our study of theme this week and begin the literary analysis, their first five paragraph essay. Everyone received their topics for the Evanston ABC book and working hard to research their topics and write a well-developed paragraph. Social Studies We had some great visitors to our classroom. Alderman Wilson came in to answer questions about the community and talk about the structure of city government. Ji-Yeon Yu also visited our classroom to talk about Native Americans in Evanston. The students asked some great questions and she helped us to build some background knowledge for our study of Chicago and Illinois history. Thank you! Everyone received their topics for the Evanston ABC book and working hard to research their topics and write a well-developed paragraph. Science Students were introduced to essential nutrients and their importance in our soil. They too the Humanity Against Hunger Challenge and became plant doctors. They were given case studies from farmers in Africa and had to identify their plant nutrient deficiencies. Then they took soil samples from our future garden area and conducted pH and nutrient tests, determining the overall health of the soil. They also identified the soil type and conducted a soil study to determine how the soil was made. Next was learning about earthworms and scientists views of their impact on soil and ecosystems. We concluded with earthworm dissection. Whew! Being a soil scientist is a lot of work! Math Wow! Everyone is working through Fact Master on Moby Max and learning their facts. Tests and corrections were made last week and we are moving on to the next units. Both groups will be working on multiplication.
