Language Arts The students completed their first narrative writing. They completed the writing process; thinking, organizing, writing, editing and revision. The grammar book will be introduced this week. Math The first unit for each group is coming to a close this week. We will be reviewing next week and taking the test toward the end of the week. Social Studies We will have two exciting visitors this week. Alderman Wilson (of the 4th ward) will be out guest on Wednesday morning to engage the students in a discussion about the city of Evanston and it government structure. On Thursday afternoon we will be visited by Ji-Yeon Yuh, who will be speaking about Native Americans in Evanston and the treaties that forced them from their land. The kids are excited to have guest speakers this week! Science We will be taking soil samples from the proposed garden area at the front of the school. The students will be doing four chemical tests and a soil study for themselves. we will also send a sample to a lab in Iowa for further testing. Water testing last week was interesting and fun. I did learn that the water quality tests completed by last year's fourth grade prompted Evanston Ecology Center's Erika Doroghazi to contact the city of Evanston. The pH level, phosphorus and presence of E-coli concerned her. The city hired some scientists to adjust these levels and this year's tests reflect a much more healthy ecosystem. This week is a very exciting and enriching experience in Lower School. It is LEADERSHIP WEEK, formally known as Kindness Week. This is the time that the children are shown that being a leader and doing the right thing is valued and expected at Roycemore. The week will be based on Stephen Covey's Seven Habits of Happy Kids, which you can see on the bulletin board by the Lower School bathrooms. We will be discussing: Leader to self (Habits 1-3) Leader to Others (Habits 4-6) Being Healthy (Habit 7) The children will be engaging in many activities that will stress the above. PICTURE DAY, THURSDAY, OCTOBER 1. This year all of our Lower School students will be having their pictures taken before lunch, so you can dress them nicely in the morning. Encourage your student to take of these features in every day items like newspaper articles, books at home, webpages and even cereal boxes! They are also practicing the "Check for Understanding" comprehension strategy. This strategy requires them to stop at the end of a page and ask themselves," Who is this about and what is happening?" Please practice this with them while reading at home. Science The water and soil unit is underway.
