The students were introduced to text mapping. It is strategy that shows them the valuable information contained in text features such as captions, headings, and graphs. Encourage your student to take of these features in every day items like newspaper articles, books at home, webpages and even cereal boxes! They are also practicing the "Check for Understanding" comprehension strategy. This strategy requires them to stop at the end of a page and ask themselves," Who is this about and what is happening?" Please practice this with them while reading at home. Science The water and soil unit is underway. The garden area has been measured, they will create a shade and sun graphic this week and test the soil for nutrients soon. This week they learned about the water cycle and the importance of taking care of our water supply. Our field trip to Lovelace Pond is next Tuesday. There is a $5 charge per student. Please send it as soon as possible. We leave at 12:15 pm. The students will be conducting water quality tests to decide if you can eat the fish. Social Studies The students have been reading about animals and plants of Illinois and their habitats. Out field trip to the Evanston History Museum is Wednesday. There is no charge for this trip. We are leaving at 8:45 am. The students will be looking for topics to research for their first writing project. Math The groups are reviewing place value and practicing rounding. Please encourage them to practice this at home, when possible. Wednesday, September 16 Field Trip to the Evanston History Center The bus leaves at 8:45 am and we will return to school around 11:00 am. Tuesday, September 22 Field trip to Lovelace Pond for water quality testing The bus leaves at 12:15 pm and we will return to school around 2:30 pm. No school on Wednesday, September 23 for Yom Kippur Snack: Please help your child remember to bring in a snack each day. We eat snack around 10:00 am. If your child's snack requires a spoon or fork, please send that with them as well. Thank you! AFTER SCHOOL ENRICHMENT: Begins Tuesday, September 15 You may still register in enrichment activities that have room. Please let Mrs. Orzoff know a.s.a.p. if your child wants to join one. Gr. 1-4 Lego Club will NOT meet Monday, September 14 in the 2nd Grade Classroom G13 from 3:15-4:00. Programming will NOT meet Monday, September 14 in the 4th Grade Classroom G12 from 3:15-4:00. Martial Arts will meet Tuesday, September 15 in the Multi Purpose Room from 3:15-4:00. Creative Improv will meet Wednesday, September 16 in the Gross Motor Room from 3:15-4:00. Cross Country will meet Wednesday, September 16 in the Gym Foyer from 3:15-4:00. Chess Club will meet Thursday, September 17 in the G06 from 3:00-3:50. Fitness Fun Friday will meet Friday, September 18 in the Gym from 3:15-4:00. A REMINDER: Please remember that Roycemore Lower School is a nut/peanut-free environment. Please remember this when you send in birthday treats and snacks for your children.
