Grandparent's Day was so much fun! It was great to meet so many new faces. We hope your guests enjoyed themselves. Please scroll down to see some graet pictures from the day. LA The students completed I Survived the Great Chicago Fire by Lauren Tarshis. They focused on learning about the genre, historical fiction, onomatopoeias and theme. Monday will begin a second historical fiction novel entitled, Color Me Dark; The Diary of Nellie Lee Love, The Great Migration North. Social Studies We wrapped up learning about the Chicago Fire and will begin the World's Columbian Exposition on Monday. Math Wow! The students have been working diligently on their one bedroom apartment renovations. We completed a Google Hangout with an interior designer, who talked about being an entrepreneur, design elements and how she uses math in her work. It was awesome! This math project has them using multiplication in real-world application to find square footage and cost of items when renovating a home. After finding the square footage for flooring and paint costs, the students transferred the dimensions to a scale drawing. They had to include all the rooms and furniture, also drawn to scale. They are now using floorplanner.com to create a 3D model of their space. They are doing great! Please note December's important events! They will also create graphs and creatively share their findings in an infographic. The multiplication unit continues. The groups worked on the process of multiplication in one-digit by three digit or multiplying with decimals. These skills were also used in solving word problems. Social Studies The students read about and discussed the tribes of Native Americans that may live in Chicago today. We used an interview conducted on WBEZ's Curious City website to investigate this question. They also learned about Jean Baptiste Pointe DuSable and his role in the first permanent settlement in Chicago. Ask them what they think of his philosophy. Hopefully you will learn something new! There are some great Chicago TV and radio sources that may be fun for your family to view/listen to and talk about. Here are some links to those resources: http://curiouscity.wbez.org/ http://chicagotonight.wttw.com/ http://www.wttw.com/main.taf?p=1,9 Science For some Halloween fun, the students created pumpkin launchers. They learned about force and levers, and then used that information to create a catapult from craft sticks, a cup and rubber bands. We used the results of each contest to talk about a working hypothesis and discuss what we learned about the scientific concepts. It was a ton of fun! Congratulations to our winners, Maya and Youngnim! |
